Antique finishes can be produced using a variety of undercoats to produce the desired final finish. In general a base plating is applied that will be the final textured finish ie

Copper base plating with a subsequent black plated finish or an oxidised finish can be relieved by polishing, brushing or tumbling to produce the desired antique apperance.

The same can be achieved with base coats of Nickel, Tin, Silver, Bronze or Gold.

In all cases the base coat shows through to provide the final finish

A Bright Black finish can be achieved by plating Electroblack directly over bright nickel with no relieving.
